All the world says my Tao is great, yet resembles nothing — and precisely because it resembles nothing has it stayed great. Then Lao Tzu opens his hand and shows the only inventory he ever offers: I have three treasures, which I keep and guard. The first is compassion; the second is frugality; the third is not daring to be ahead of the world. Everything the book has taught condenses into these three.
Each treasure generates its unlikely opposite: through compassion one can be truly courageous — care, not aggression, is what makes people brave; through frugality one can be truly generous — only the unsquandered have something to give; through not daring to be first, one becomes a leader among leaders. And each shortcut is fatal: bravery without compassion, generosity without frugality, leadership without humility — that, the text says flatly, is death. The chapter closes with compassion promoted to cosmic armor: in battle it brings victory, in defence it holds fast; when Heaven would save someone, it guards them with compassion.
