Tao Te Ching

The shortest complete epistemology ever written: to know that you do not know is the highest; not to know while thinking you know — that is sickness. In two lines the chapter sorts all minds into two conditions. The healthy one holds its knowledge with an open palm, aware of the darkness surrounding every certainty; the sick one has sealed itself inside its own confidence, and the seal is precisely what prevents the cure.

The remedy is as recursive as the disease: the sage is not sick because he treats his sickness as sickness — only because he recognises presumption as presumption does he remain free of it. There is no once-for-all inoculation; health of mind is the ongoing willingness to catch yourself knowing too much. Socrates built a career on the same discovery a world away, but Lao Tzu's version adds the medical frame: intellectual humility is not modesty, not politeness, not a debating posture — it is hygiene. The mind that can still say 'I do not know' is the only mind still capable of learning what it needs.
