Yoga is the settling of the mind's whirl. When the turning stops, the seer rests in its own nature instead of being coloured by every passing thought.

Obstacles and the mind's patterns

Patanjali names the afflictions that cloud awareness — ignorance, ego, craving, aversion, fear — and the steady practice and non-attachment that loosen them.

The goal is kaivalya: the clear, free awareness that no longer mistakes itself for the changing contents of the mind.
